After 56 days, Kenyan doctors have called off their strike following negotiations with the government. The strike, initiated by the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU), affected the country’s public healthcare system since March 15.
While the strike has ended, there’s still unresolved issues regarding the deployment and payment of intern doctors, crucial to the public healthcare system. The union proposed a monthly payment of about $1,500 for intern doctors, while the government suggested $500.
Since an agreement couldn’t be reached, the matter will be taken to court, extending the period of uncertainty for intern doctors for the next 60 days.
