The Lagos State government has announced plans to temporarily close and reroute traffic on the Eko Bridge for essential repairs by the Federal Ministry of Works. These repairs are set to begin on Monday, September 16, and will last for approximately eight weeks, with the bridge expected to fully reopen by mid-November.
Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, shared the update on Friday, September 13. He explained that the work will be done in four phases, during which sections of the bridge will be either partially or completely closed, depending on the progress of the project.
To ease traffic during the closure, Osiyemi advised motorists to take the following alternative routes:
- Drivers heading to the Island from Funsho Williams Avenue can use the service lane at Alaka to connect to Costain and access the Eko Bridge.
- Another option for those heading to the Island is to go through Costain to Eko Bridge and link Apongbon for their destination.
- Motorists can also access Apongbon inwards Eko Bridge, linking Costain to reach Funsho Williams Avenue.
- Alternatively, drivers can go from Costain to Alaka/Funsho Williams Avenue or use Apapa Road from Costain, link Oyingbo, and connect to Adekunle to access the Third Mainland Bridge.
- For motorists heading to Surulere, they are advised to use Costain, link Breweries, and head towards Abebe Village to connect Eric Moore/Bode Thomas.
Osiyemi also assured that officials from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) will be stationed at key points to help manage traffic and minimize disruptions during the repair period.
