The champion under-17 national football team of Somalia has returned home after winning the East and Central African (Cecafa) championship at a competition in Addis Abeba, the capital of Ethiopia.
The South Sudanese team was defeated 3-1 by the young Somalis in the championship game on Saturday. Since the nation’s civil war began in 1991, this is the first time a Somali football team has triumphed in an international match.
A nation riven by strife has experienced a rare sense of oneness thanks to the win. Upon the team’s arrival in the capital city of Mogadishu, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud greeted them in the presidential palace.
In a Facebook post, he stated, “You are a good example for the other Somali young to follow for their country and to bring victories like this.”
