Tory Lanez’s sentencing has been delayed as he prepares to request a new trial.
The Toronto rapper appeared in court for the first time since his conviction for shooting Megan Thee Stallion on Tuesday. The judge recognized his new lawyer, David Kenner, who previously represented Snoop Dogg and Suge Knight, and agreed to postpone his sentencing from January 27 to February 28 at the earliest.
Kenner is preparing to file a motion for a new trial as well as a motion to dissolve the protective order that prevents Lanez from discussing the case, according to Rolling Stone.
“We are excited to litigate the motion for a new trial,” Kenner told reporters. “We have a lot of faith.”

Lanez appeared in court wearing an orange jail jumpsuit and a white rosary around his neck. He thanked his supporters, including his father and stepmother, but only spoke to confirm his new legal counsel.
Kenner represented Snoop Dogg during his acquittal for murder in 1996. He also represented Suge Knight in a wrongful death suit filed in connection with Terry Carter’s death, which resulted in a mistrial. Lanez was previously represented by George Mgdesyan, who stated that he gladly stepped down to make way for Kenner.
Lanez was found guilty on three counts of assault with a semiautomatic handgun, carrying a loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle, and discharging a firearm with gross negligence on December 23, after a two-week trial. When he is sentenced, he faces up to 22 years and eight months in prison and deportation.
