A court in Egypt sentenced 30 people to prison terms ranging from life in prison to five years of hard labor for their involvement with the now-outlawed Muslim Brotherhood.
Ayesha Khairat al-Shater and her husband were each sentenced to ten years in prison. Her father was the Muslim Brotherhood’s first presidential candidate in 2012, but he was defeated by Mohamed Morsi.
She was arrested in 2018 and charged with using social media inappropriately and promoting terrorist ideas.
Amnesty International and other rights organizations had called her detention arbitrary and advocated for her release.
One woman was acquitted by the State Security Criminal Court.
