The Federal Trade Commission of the United States is expected to vote next week on whether to send information requests about deceptive advertising to eight social media and video streaming companies, the agency said on Thursday.
The agency did not specify which social media companies would be targeted but stated that the data would be used to determine what steps they had taken to detect and remove deceptive advertising from their platforms.

Facebook and its subsidiaries Instagram and WhatsApp are among the most powerful social media companies. Alphabet’s YouTube and TikTok are two of the most popular video streaming platforms.
The commissioners will also vote on requesting information from five unnamed business credit reporting agencies about how they collect data and market their products.
The investigations could result in enforcement actions depending on what is discovered, but they are intended to lead to studies that could underpin future legislation or rules.
The votes are scheduled for a public meeting on March 16.
