Michael Lerner, known for his roles in Barton Fink, Elf, Godzilla, and other films, died at the age of 81, his family announced on Sunday.
His nephew, Sam, shared the news on Instagram, writing, “We lost a legend last night.” It’s difficult to put into words how brilliant and influential my uncle Michael was to me.”
The memorial included a carousel of photos of Michael over the years. Micheal is seen in one photo posing with comedian Eddie Murphy.

“His stories always inspired me and inspired me to pursue a career in acting.” “He was the coolest, most confident, talented guy I’ve ever known, and the fact that he was my blood will always make me feel special,” Sam wrote of his uncle.
“Everyone who knew him knew how insane he was—in the best way possible.” I’m so grateful I got to spend so much time with him, and we’re all grateful we can continue to admire his work for the rest of our lives.”
“RIP Michael, enjoy your unlimited Cuban cigars, comfy chairs, and endless movie marathon,” Sam wrote at the end of the post.

Lerner was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in 1992 for his role in Barton Fink. In the Coen brothers’ 1991 thriller, he played movie mogul Jack Lipnick.
Lerner played James Caan’s boss in Will Farrell’s beloved Christmas film Elf in 2003. Caan is forced to choose between his job and assisting his son in finding Buddy after he runs away in the film. “You’re finished at Greenway if you walk outta here,” Lerner’s character screams at Caan.
Lerner has also appeared in the films Blank Check, Newsies, Harlem Nights, For Richer or Poorer, The Mod Squad, Celebrity, and A Serious Man.
