Despite court challenges, Nigerian Information Minister Lai Mohammed says President-elect Bola Tinubu will be sworn in on May 29.
Dissatisfied with the outcome of the presidential election on February 25, groups are calling for an interim government as outgoing President Muhammadu Buhari steps down in May.
Mr. Mohammed stated that there was “no basis” for forming an interim government. He stated that the opposition political parties have the legal right to challenge the presidential election.

On March 21, four presidential candidates filed legal challenges to Mr. Tinubu’s victory, alleging widespread rigging and manipulation of tallies.
The judiciary takes about eight months to rule on a presidential election petition. The petition must be heard within 180 days of its filing. A petitioner has 21 days from the date of the decision to appeal the tribunal’s decision to the Court of Appeal.
If petitioners are dissatisfied with the appellate court’s decision, they have 21 days to appeal to the Supreme Court, whose decision is final.
