Maia Kealoha joins Zach Galifianakis in the remake of Disney’s cult 2002 animated movie.
Disney has discovered its Lilo. According to The Hollywood Reporter, newcomer Maia Kealoha has been cast in Disney’s live-action Lilo & Stitch, a remake of the cult 2002 animated film.
Dean Fleischer Camp, the director of indie darling and Oscar nominee for best-animated feature Marcel the Shell With Shoes On is directing the film, which is set to be a major release on Disney+.
The Hawaii-set story follows the friendship of a lonely human girl named Lilo and a dog-like alien named Stitch, who was genetically engineered to be a destructive force. With nosy social workers and pursuing aliens knocking on the door, the two bond over a shared sense of family and triumph. In February, Zach Galifianakis joined the cast. Stitch, of course, will be a computer-generated creation.
The adaptation’s script was written by Chris Kekaniokalani Bright. Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois wrote and directed the original film, which, while not a box-office success at the time, developed a devoted following that has only grown in the years since.
Rideback’s Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich are producing. Ryan Halprin of Rideback is executive producing.
