Three young men have been apprehended in Diabene, Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis, by the Western Regional Police Command. They are facing charges related to their alleged association with Russia’s Wagner mercenary group and their attempt to establish a presence for this group in Ghana.
The individuals in question have been identified as Evans (25 years old), Michael Asiedu (23 years old), and Ernest Asiedu (26 years old). They recently organized a public gathering during which they were seen displaying the flags of Wagner and Russia. According to a report from Citinewsroom.com, the trio gathered approximately 20 young people in the Diabene community park, allegedly with the assistance of an Australian sponsor, to form what appeared to be a military group.
However, a tip-off led to their arrest by the police before they could carry out their plans.
The Assemblywoman of Fijai, Ramatu Ibrahim, who oversees Diabene, has reportedly confirmed these developments. She emphasized the importance of holding the suspects accountable under the law as a deterrent to others. She stated, “The police said after arrest and interrogation, the boys said they were doing a freedom demonstration, they said they were training on how to wage war against the government, so I asked how? They were hoisting different flags of different countries and playing the national anthem. Their influential leader is abroad, and the leader in Ghana is 25 years old. After the police explained things to them, they realized that they didn’t know what they were in for. I learnt they were promised some money if their planned action becomes successful,” as reported by Citinewsroom.com.
Mensah Promise, a DJ who was detained alongside the suspects while playing music for their gathering, has disclosed that he and his co-suspects have already appeared in court twice at the Takoradi Circuit Court but are currently out on bail.
The Western Regional Police Command is expected to provide further updates on this development, although they have confirmed the incident.
