James Kwasi Appiah, the former coach of the Black Stars, has taken up a new role as the head coach of the Sudan national team. This exciting development comes as Appiah, at the age of 63, embarks on a new chapter in his coaching career.
As reported by Joy Sports, Appiah has officially signed a contract that will have him lead the Sudanese national team for the next three years. This move signifies a fresh start for both Appiah and Sudanese football, and it will be intriguing to see how his coaching expertise influences the team’s performance in the upcoming years.
It’s worth noting that Sudan faced disappointment in their recent quest to qualify for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). They finished at the bottom of Group I during the qualifiers, which included strong teams like DR Congo, Mauritania, and Gabon. However, with Appiah now at the helm, there’s hope for a resurgence in Sudanese football, and fans will be eagerly awaiting the team’s progress under his guidance.

The Sudanese Football Association is seeking a turnaround in their fortunes, and they’ve turned to a familiar face to lead the way: James Kwasi Appiah. Appiah is no stranger to Sudanese football, having previously managed Al Khartoum from 2014 to 2017.
During his tenure at Al Khartoum, he made a significant impact, guiding the club to qualify for the CAF Confederations Cup and achieving their highest-ever points tally of 65 in his second season. His track record with the club speaks to his coaching prowess and ability to elevate a team’s performance.
Appiah brings a wealth of experience to his new role as Sudan’s head coach. Notably, he made history as the first indigenous coach to qualify Ghana for the World Cup back in 2014. While his second stint as Ghana’s coach ended after a disappointing showing at the tournament in Brazil, he continued to be involved in football. He was even named as a member of the Interim Management Committee responsible for overseeing Asante Kotoko’s affairs. Additionally, he’s in the running for a position on the Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association.
Prior to his appointment as Sudan’s head coach, Appiah served as the sporting director of Kenpong Football Academy. With such a rich background in football management, Appiah is well-prepared to take on this new challenge and make a positive impact on Sudanese football. His dedication to the sport and his extensive experience make him a valuable asset to the Sudanese national team.
