Kwesi Ahwoi, a prominent figure in the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has issued an apology to John Dramani Mahama following his recent remarks.
His apology comes after comments made at a gathering hosted by the Churchstreet group of NDC supporters in honor of the party’s running mate, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang.
During his speech at the event, Ahwoi encouraged Prof. Jane Naana to remain prepared to assume the presidency if the need arises, referencing the unexpected circumstances that led to John Mahama becoming President after the passing of Atta-Mills.
The video of his speech circulated widely on social media, eliciting mixed reactions from the public.
In a statement released afterward, the former Interior Minister expressed regret for the misunderstanding caused by his comments. He acknowledged misspeaking and accepted criticism, even though some interpretations misrepresented his intentions.
Ahwoi clarified that Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang promptly corrected the misunderstanding during the event, affirming her confidence in John Mahama winning the 2024 general elections and completing his full term in office.
He lamented that his remarks overshadowed the otherwise jovial atmosphere of the occasion and urged party members to move past the incident, rallying behind John Mahama as the flagbearer to lead Ghana forward in the upcoming December 2024 elections.
