Kofi Asare, the Executive Director of Africa Education Watch, has urged law enforcement to take action against Gborbu Wulomo for his involvement in an unlawful marriage with an underage girl.
The 63-year-old Gborbu Wulomo faced backlash following a viral video showing him marrying Naa Okromo, a 12-year-old girl, in a traditional ceremony attended by a crowd in Nungua on Saturday, March 30, 2024.
Despite Gborbu Wulomo’s defense that the girl wouldn’t undertake marital responsibilities, Kofi Asare expressed outrage, stressing that such justifications hold no weight under the law.
“The law clearly states that marrying a girl under 16 is illegal. Claims that she won’t fulfill marital duties are irrelevant legally. Authorities must take action against the Nungua Wulomo and his accomplices immediately,” Asare stated in a Facebook post.
The GaDangme Council clarified that the relationship between the traditional ga priest and the 12-year-old girl is a betrothal, not a marriage.
However, the Ghana Police Service confirmed that the 12-year-old girl married to the Gborbu Wulomo of Nungua is under their protection.
The Police assured that the child and her parents are currently under their care while investigations into the controversial marriage proceed.
In collaboration with the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection and the Department of Social Welfare, the Ghana Police Service has taken steps to provide necessary support and assistance to the girl during this difficult time.
Additionally, Madina MP Francis-Xavier Sosu has submitted a petition to the CID of the Ghana Police Service, urging them to arrest and prosecute the 63-year-old Ga priest accused of marrying a 12-year-old girl.
Sosu argued that the action violates both local and international laws concerning Child Care and Protection.
