The Paramount Chief of the Sempe Traditional Area, Nii Adote Otintor II, has strongly denounced the marriage between a 63-year-old Ga priest and a 12-year-old girl, sparking widespread condemnation.
The controversial union, formalized on March 30, 2024, between Gborbu Wulomo, Nuumo Borketey Laweh XXXIII, and the underage girl, Naa Ayemoede, has incited outrage and criticism from various sectors of the Ga Dangbe community.
In a heartfelt plea, Nii Adote Otintor II called upon the president, traditional leaders, and other institutions to prioritize the safeguarding of the girl child, emphasizing the supremacy of the 1992 Constitution over any customary practices or traditions.
He emphasized the necessity of shielding the youth, who represent the future of the Ga people, from harmful customs that endanger their well-being and prospects.
Nii Bortey Kofi Frankwa II, spokesperson for the Sempe Mantse, expressed regret that such incidents tarnish the image of the Ga Dangbe people and urged the youth to oppose the perpetuation of such injustices.
He criticized certain leaders for sullying the tribe’s reputation and warned of the long-term repercussions if these issues are left unaddressed.
Nii Bortey Kofi Frankwa II stated, “What is happening tarnishes the reputation of all Ga Dangbe people. I urge all Ga youth to stand up at this moment. Some leaders of the ethnic group are bringing shame upon the tribe. If we overlook matters like this, it will bring disgrace to the community.”
Meanwhile, Kofi Asare, the Executive Director of Africa Education Watch, has urged law enforcement to arrest Gborbu Wulomo for his involvement in the illegal marriage.
Madina MP Francis-Xavier Sosu has lodged a complaint with the CID of the Ghana Police Service, urging them to apprehend and prosecute the 63-year-old Ga priest accused of marrying a 12-year-old girl.
He stated that the act constitutes a violation of both local and international laws governing Child Care and Protection.
However, the Ghana Police Service revealed that the 12-year-old girl married to the Gborbu Wulomo of Nungua is under their protection.
The Police stated that the child and her parents are currently under their care while investigations into the controversial marriage are underway.
The Ghana Police Service added that, in collaboration with the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection and the Department of Social Welfare, measures have been initiated to provide the necessary support.
