In a tragic incident in Morocco, eight individuals have died, and dozens have been hospitalized after consuming homemade alcohol, according to the health ministry.
The regional health directorate reported that severe complications from poisoning resulted in the deaths in the town of Sidi Allal Tazi, located about 100 kilometers north of Rabat. Between Monday and Wednesday, over 100 people in the town suffered from alcohol poisoning due to methanol consumption, with 81 individuals still under medical supervision.
Authorities have identified two suspects, aged 21 and 41, who were responsible for producing the bootleg liquor and are currently among those hospitalized.
This incident echoes previous tragedies in Morocco. Last year, homemade alcohol led to seven deaths in Meknes and 19 deaths in Ksar El Kebir in 2022.
While Moroccan law prohibits the sale of alcohol to Muslims, who constitute 99% of the population, alcohol is still readily available. Bars, restaurants, and licensed stores often sell it discreetly behind opaque windows and thick curtains.
