Pop sensation Ed Sheeran has made headlines by acquiring a minority stake in Ipswich Town, the club announced on Thursday.
The 33-year-old English singer-songwriter, who has been a dedicated fan of the team for years, now holds a 1.4 percent share in the club. Sheeran has been a shirt sponsor for both the Ipswich men’s and women’s teams since 2021.
However, Ipswich clarified that Sheeran’s investment is a passive one, meaning he will not join the club’s board or take an active role in its operations.
Sheeran expressed his enthusiasm about the investment, saying, “I’m thrilled to own a small piece of my hometown football club. It’s every football fan’s dream to be involved with the team they love, and I’m incredibly grateful for this chance.”
Ipswich Town is making its return to the Premier League for the first time in 22 years this season.
Ipswich chairman Mark Ashton commented, “Ed and his team’s support over the past three years has been extraordinary. His investment in the club feels like a natural extension of our partnership.”
The team kicks off their new Premier League campaign with a home match against Liverpool this Saturday.
