Jennifer Lopez has reportedly filed for divorce from Ben Affleck, marking the end of their high-profile marriage just two years after they rekindled their romance and tied the knot.
The couple, famously dubbed “Bennifer” during their early 2000s relationship, had reignited their love nearly two decades later. However, according to reports from Variety and TMZ, Lopez submitted divorce papers in a Los Angeles court on Tuesday.
While representatives for Lopez have not commented, and Affleck’s publicist has yet to respond, this news has captured significant attention. This would be the fourth marriage for the 55-year-old pop icon and actress and the second for the 52-year-old Oscar-winning actor and director.
Lopez and Affleck originally met in 2002 on the set of the film Gigli, which was critically panned. Their relationship quickly became a media sensation, leading to an engagement and a planned wedding in 2003. However, they postponed their nuptials and eventually called it quits in early 2004.
“Bennifer” made headlines once again in 2021 when they were spotted together, sparking rumors of a renewed romance. Lopez later described their reunion as “a beautiful love story that we got a second chance.” They announced their engagement in April 2022 and were married in a low-key ceremony in Las Vegas that July. The following month, they celebrated with a lavish three-day event at Affleck’s estate in Georgia, attended by Hollywood stars like Matt Damon and Kevin Smith.
The couple reportedly purchased a $60 million home in Los Angeles last year, but rumors of marital issues surfaced earlier this year. Observers noted that Lopez celebrated her 55th birthday without Affleck, and TMZ reported that they had sold their shared home, with Affleck moving into a luxury bachelor pad.
Sources cited by People magazine suggested that their differing views on public life strained their relationship. “She likes to open her heart to her fans and to the world,” an insider said, “but he is more introspective and private. This has been difficult day-to-day.”
According to TMZ, the divorce papers list their separation date as April 26, 2024, and it’s reported that the two are no longer on speaking terms.
Lopez has previously been married to Ojani Noa, Cris Judd, and Marc Anthony, with whom she shares twins Max and Emme. Affleck was married to actress Jennifer Garner, with whom he has three children: Violet, Seraphina, and Samuel.
