A pivotal meeting between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is underway in Abuja, aimed at averting a nationwide strike in Nigeria’s public universities.
The meeting, held at the Federal Ministry of Education’s Conference Hall, comes in response to ASUU’s recent threat of industrial action due to unresolved issues. The union, led by President Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, has voiced dissatisfaction over unfulfilled commitments concerning funding, staff welfare, and previous agreements.
Minister of Education Prof. Tahir Mamman had previously indicated the government’s willingness to negotiate, though a scheduled meeting last Monday was postponed without explanation.
Key figures at the meeting include senior officials from the Federal Ministry of Education and former ASUU presidents, including immediate past president Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi.
The outcome of this critical meeting will be essential in determining whether public universities in Nigeria will face another strike. Both sides are under significant pressure to reach a resolution that will keep academic activities uninterrupted across the nation.
