Elon Musk’s SpaceX internet service, Starlink, has decided to pause its recent subscription price increase for Nigerian users. The decision, shared with customers on Thursday, comes as the company addresses regulatory feedback from Nigeria’s telecom authorities.
Just three weeks ago, Starlink announced a substantial price hike, raising monthly subscription costs from N38,000 to N75,000—a 97% jump. They also increased the installation kit fee for new users by 34%, from N440,000 to N590,000, sparking strong reactions from subscribers who found the new pricing too steep.
Currently, Starlink is Nigeria’s third-largest internet service provider, reaching about 24 million users nationwide.
In its message to subscribers, Starlink promised to refund or credit those already billed at the higher rate. The company also reminded users of the option to cancel if they no longer found the service affordable.
“Last month, we raised Starlink’s monthly service price in Nigeria to address inflation and support reliable service,” the company stated. “Today, we’re pausing this increase to address regulatory issues. We’re dedicated to high-speed internet in Nigeria, but service improvements depend on regulatory support. Without it, our ability to continue service may be impacted.”
This move reflects Starlink’s commitment to maintaining connectivity in Nigeria amid challenges and its intent to work collaboratively with regulators to sustain quality service.
