In a heartfelt Instagram post, Fernandes expressed gratitude for Ten Hag’s leadership and the moments they shared. He said, “Thanks for everything, boss! I appreciate the trust and the moments we share, and I wish you all the best.” He urged fans to remember the positive impact Ten Hag had during his time at the club, despite the recent struggles: “Even knowing the last period hasn’t been great for all of us, I hope you fans can keep with you the good things Erik has done for our club.”
With the managerial change, Manchester United has appointed former striker Ruud van Nistelrooy as interim manager. A legendary figure at the club, van Nistelrooy was part of Ten Hag’s coaching staff last season and will now take charge as the club seeks a permanent replacement.
Former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel shared his thoughts on the appointment of van Nistelrooy during the Kelly and Wrighty show. He admitted to some uncertainty about van Nistelrooy’s coaching abilities, stating, “I don’t know how good a manager Ruud van Nistelrooy is.” While he acknowledged van Nistelrooy’s prowess as a player, Schmeichel noted that coaching presents a different set of challenges. He added, “If he can replicate some of his playing form as a manager, he has a good chance of thriving in this role.”
Schmeichel also suggested that Ten Hag may not have received the necessary support during his tenure, indicating that the challenges faced by the former manager were exacerbated by a lack of backing from the club itself.
