Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Taoreed Lagbaja. The sad news was announced today, with reports that Lagbaja passed away on Tuesday night in Lagos following an illness.
Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to President Bola Tinubu, shared details about the late general’s distinguished life and service. Lagbaja, born on February 28, 1968, was appointed Chief of Army Staff on June 19, 2023. His military journey began at the Nigerian Defence Academy in 1987, and he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Nigerian Infantry Corps in 1992 as part of the 39th Regular Course.
Lagbaja leaves behind his wife, Mariya, and their two children. President Tinubu offered heartfelt condolences to his family and the Nigerian Armed Forces, honoring Lagbaja’s dedication and commitment to his nation.
Atiku Abubakar, former presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), expressed his sorrow in a heartfelt tribute, reflecting on the profound loss: “The passing of any soul diminishes us all, as in each departure, a part of humanity fades away. Lt. General Lagbaja dedicated his life with honor and distinction to the Nigerian Army. My heartfelt condolences go to his family and the entire Armed Forces. May his soul find eternal peace.”
