The Federal Ministry of Education has announced the removal of Professor Bernard Odoh as Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, along with the dissolution of the university’s Governing Council. This decision was revealed in a statement by Folashade Boriowo, Director of Press and Public Relations at the Ministry of Education, on Wednesday.
The move follows allegations from the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), which accused the Governing Council of disregarding proper procedures in Odoh’s appointment. ASUU had previously urged the Ministry to take action, citing widespread irregularities.
According to the Ministry, the Governing Council’s actions violated university regulations, including the appointment of a Vice-Chancellor who did not meet the required qualifications. This decision reportedly caused unrest and disrupted harmony within the institution.
Minister of Education Dr. Tunji Alausa stressed the urgency of restoring stability at the university, warning that the Council’s actions had put the institution at risk of further instability.
To address the situation, the Ministry plans to appoint an Acting Vice-Chancellor and establish a new Governing Council to oversee the university’s affairs and ensure compliance with legal standards. These measures aim to restore order and uphold the institution’s integrity.
