Enugu State has been chosen to host the 23rd National Sports Festival in 2026, marking a historic first for the state. The announcement came from the Director-General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Bukola Olopade, during a briefing in Abuja.
The selection followed an intense bidding process and a thorough evaluation by the NSC. Enugu stood out as the preferred choice, with the commission expressing confidence in the state’s ability to organize an exceptional and memorable event.
The National Sports Festival, held every two years, brings together athletes from across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. It’s a platform for celebrating sportsmanship, fostering unity, and showcasing athletic excellence.
Before Enugu’s turn, the 22nd edition is set to take place in January 2025 in Ogun State, with promises of a top-tier event. The NSC emphasized that choosing Enugu well in advance reflects a commitment to proper planning and a smooth execution of the festival.
This milestone marks the first time Enugu will host the festival since it began in 1973. Olopade expressed optimism that the event will continue to highlight Nigeria’s sporting talent while promoting inclusivity and national pride.
