Super Eagles winger Ademola Lookman delivered a powerful acceptance speech upon being named the 2024 CAF Player of the Year, reflecting on his journey of resilience and personal growth. Lookman clinched the prestigious award, surpassing notable contenders like Simon Adingra from Ivory Coast, PSG’s Achraf Hakimi, Guinea’s Serhou Guirassy, and South African goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.
During his speech, the 27-year-old reflected on a defining moment from his career. He recalled a challenging experience at Fulham in the Premier League in 2020, where he attempted a panenka-style penalty in a crucial match against West Ham, only to see his effort saved by goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski. Despite the disappointment, this moment became a turning point in his career.
“Just over four years ago, I faced a difficult moment in front of the world,” Lookman said. “Fast forward to today, and I stand here as the best player in Africa.” He urged young players not to see setbacks as failures, but as opportunities for growth. “Don’t let your past mistakes limit your potential. Turn your pain into strength and keep pushing forward,” he added.

Ademola Lookman capped off a stellar year, becoming the sixth Nigerian player to win the CAF Player of the Year award. His contributions were crucial in the Super Eagles’ second-place finish at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire. Additionally, Lookman’s standout performances helped Atalanta secure the UEFA Europa League title, where he scored all three goals in the final against Bayer Leverkusen.
Lookman was named Atalanta’s Player of the Season and earned a spot in the UEFA Europa League Team of the Year. He was also the only African nominated for the 2024 Ballon d’Or, finishing 14th overall, after scoring 27 goals and providing 12 assists for club and country in 2024.
“I’m truly grateful to God for the blessings in my life,” Lookman said from the CAF Awards stage. “I want to thank the Presidents, my teammates, and everyone at my club and country for their unwavering support.”
As he concluded his speech, Lookman emphasized his pride in the achievement. “This award is for my family and my nation. Being recognized as the best player in Africa is a tremendous honor. To all the young dreamers out there, remember: don’t let obstacles define you. Use your experiences to fuel your ambitions and keep aiming for the stars. God bless.”
