China Backs US-Russia Talks on Resolving Ukraine Conflict
China has expressed support for discussions between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, emphasizing that diplomacy remains the best path to resolving the crisis.
A spokesperson for China’s Foreign Ministry stated on Thursday that as two major global powers, the US and Russia engaging in dialogue on international matters is a positive step. He reiterated that Beijing has always believed negotiations are the key to addressing the situation.
From the onset, President Xi Jinping has advocated for a political resolution to the conflict, the spokesperson added.
Trump and Putin recently spoke over the phone and agreed to initiate talks aimed at ending the war in Ukraine. Meanwhile, the Trump administration has publicly outlined its vision for a peace deal, with some elements aligning with Moscow’s stance.
Beyond discussions on Ukraine, the US and Russia are also preparing for negotiations on a successor to the New START treaty, which limits their nuclear arsenals. However, China has resisted pressure to join these talks, maintaining that its nuclear stockpile is significantly smaller than those of the two former Cold War rivals.
During his conversation with Putin, Trump reaffirmed his desire to prevent an expensive arms race between the US, Russia, and China. He also looked forward to progress in upcoming arms control discussions in Vienna, according to a White House statement.
The Kremlin confirmed that both leaders acknowledged the urgency of bilateral talks on strategic stability and arms control. They also addressed developments concerning Iran’s nuclear program and stressed the importance of collective international efforts on the matter.
The US has taken a tough stance on Iran, withdrawing from a global agreement that limited Tehran’s nuclear activities in exchange for economic incentives. While Russia supports Iran’s civilian nuclear program, Washington has accused Tehran of secretly working on military capabilities.
