Mark Carney to Be Sworn in as Canada’s Prime Minister This Friday
Mark Carney, former central banker and newly elected leader of the Liberal Party, is set to take the oath of office as Canada’s prime minister on Friday morning, alongside his cabinet. The announcement came from the governor general’s office on Wednesday.
Carney, who secured a landslide victory with 86% of the vote, is stepping into politics for the first time at 59. His leadership marks the end of Justin Trudeau’s nearly decade-long tenure, following Trudeau’s resignation earlier this year.
His transition into office is happening swiftly, just as he promised. But he’s also taking on major challenges right away—including tense trade relations with the U.S. Addressing his supporters after his win, Carney didn’t hold back, saying: “In trade as in hockey, Canada will win.”
On Wednesday, he reaffirmed his stance, expressing readiness to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump to renegotiate trade agreements and ease economic tensions. His remarks follow the recent enforcement of a 25% tariff on Canadian steel and aluminum exports to the U.S., prompting Canada to respond with its own countermeasures.
As Carney takes office, all eyes will be on how he navigates these pressing economic and diplomatic issues.
