Edo State Moves Fast to Contain Diphtheria Outbreak
The Edo State Government has confirmed a new outbreak of diphtheria in parts of the state and has quickly launched an emergency response to keep it under control.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Fred Itua, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Monday Okpebholo, said the government is taking the situation seriously but urged residents to remain calm.
Governor Okpebholo is directly involved in leading the state’s response, working with the Ministry of Health and other key partners to contain the spread.
“All hands are on deck,” the statement read. “The state’s emergency health response is fully activated, and resources have been mobilized to manage the situation effectively.”
Vaccines have already been acquired, and a targeted immunization drive is underway—especially for children, who are most vulnerable to the disease.
Hospitals across the state have been placed on high alert. Medical workers have been asked to step up efforts to identify potential cases, isolate patients as needed, and follow proper treatment protocols.
Public education is also in full swing. Radio, television, and community outreach programs are being used to share critical information about diphtheria symptoms, which include sore throat, fever, swollen neck glands, and breathing difficulties. Residents are being urged to seek medical attention at the first sign of illness.
As part of a wider prevention strategy, the state is partnering with schools to implement early detection systems, carry out health checks, and maintain hygiene practices to keep children safe.
Health Commissioner Dr. Cyril Oshiomhole is at the forefront of the response, overseeing medical teams and ensuring that timely updates are provided to the public.
In a show of collaboration, Governor Okpebholo also brought together representatives from national and international health agencies, traditional rulers, religious leaders, and civil society groups for a joint emergency meeting to align efforts across sectors.
The state government stressed that it is fully committed to bringing the outbreak under control and protecting the health of all residents.
“Edo has managed public health challenges before, and we are confident in our capacity to do so again,” the statement added.
Citizens are encouraged to cooperate with health workers, take vaccinations seriously, and remain alert as the situation unfolds.
