UEFA Fines Barcelona Stars and Coaching Staff After Champions League Exit
Barcelona forwards Lamine Yamal and Robert Lewandowski have each been fined €5,000 by UEFA for breaching post-match anti-doping procedures. The sanctions follow their side’s Champions League semi-final defeat to Inter Milan at the San Siro.
According to UEFA’s Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body, both players failed to report immediately to the doping control station after the match, as required by competition regulations.
Spanish publications Marca and AS stressed that the matter was purely procedural, with no failed drug tests involved. The incident happened shortly after Barcelona’s 4-3 loss, a result that confirmed their elimination from the tournament.
The punishments didn’t stop with the players. Head coach Hansi Flick and assistant Marcus Sorg each received €20,000 fines and one-match suspensions for misconduct and violating UEFA’s principles of conduct. The governing body ruled that their behaviour during and after the game was improper.
Barcelona itself was also hit with financial penalties — €5,250 for objects thrown onto the pitch and €2,500 for fireworks set off by fans, totalling €7,750.
UEFA confirmed that Flick and Sorg will serve their bans in the club’s next European fixture, with all fines taking immediate effect.
