The University of the Philippines is in shock following the sudden passing of its Nigerian basketball recruit, Israel Osamudiame Friday, who died at just 19 years old.
According to reports, Israel collapsed during a training session on Tuesday at the Varsity Training Centre in Diliman. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, but despite urgent medical efforts, he could not be revived.
Bo Perasol, Director of UP’s Office for Athletics and Sports Development, confirmed the heartbreaking news in a statement:
“UP is deeply saddened to announce that one of our newest recruits, Israel Osamudiame, collapsed during practice and, despite the best efforts of medical personnel, passed away. The entire university community is devastated by this loss. We are in close contact with his family and giving them every support possible during this painful time. We also ask for privacy for his loved ones as they grieve.”
Standing tall at 6-foot-10, Israel was seen as a rising star in the sport. Originally from Abuja, Nigeria, he had recently transferred to UP from Centro Escolar University, where he impressed with his talent and athleticism while playing for the CEU Scorpions in the University and Colleges Athletic League.
Although he still had to complete a one-year residency before officially joining UAAP competition, Israel’s potential, skill set, and towering presence had already made him one of the most anticipated young players to watch in Philippine collegiate basketball.
