President Bola Tinubu has shed light on why the appointment of Nigerian ambassadors has been delayed, explaining that the process is not straightforward and that he is determined to choose only the right people for such crucial roles.
In a video message released on Tuesday, the President revealed that while a few ambassadorial slots are still open, creating a credible list has been far from easy.
“I couldn’t appoint everybody I would have wanted to,” Tinubu said, thanking Nigerians for their patience. “I still have some ambassadorial positions left, and a lot of people want them. But putting those names together has not been simple.”
He emphasized that his main priority has been reviving the economy and restoring confidence among citizens before finalizing any diplomatic selections.
“First, fix the economy and bring hope to the people—that is what matters most, and that hope is already here,” the President added.
Tinubu expressed gratitude for the public’s understanding, assuring that ambassadorial appointments will be made at the right time.
The last set of envoys was appointed during the administration of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari. Since Tinubu took office on May 29, 2023, pressure has continued to mount from citizens and interest groups for him to announce new ambassadors, especially as many diplomatic missions are still operating without substantive heads.
