Nigerian media personality May Edochie has taken legal action against her former lawyer, Emeka Ugwuonye, demanding ₦1 billion in damages over claims of cyberbullying, cyberstalking, and spreading false information about her private life.
In a strongly worded cease-and-desist letter issued by her new legal team, May—ex-wife of actor Yul Edochie—described Ugwuonye’s actions as a “calculated attack” on her reputation.
According to the letter, his repeated online posts went far beyond defamation, encouraging others to circulate harmful narratives that have caused her “severe and irreparable harm” to her business, image, and personal safety.
“Our Client has expressed deep displeasure and grave concern over your incessant public posts, cyberstalking, and cyberbullying concerning her and her private family matters,” the letter stated.
It further accused him of instigating third parties to spread malicious claims, amplifying the damage to her reputation and exposing her to threats.
As part of her demands, May is seeking:
-
A full retraction of all posts made against her.
-
A public apology across every platform where the statements were shared.
-
A written undertaking to desist from further defamatory publications.
-
₦1 billion in compensation for damages.
The letter also gave Ugwuonye a strict 48-hour deadline to comply.
This legal move comes after Ugwuonye stepped down from representing May in her divorce case earlier in July, citing “persistent bullying” from her supporters, popularly known as “May Nation.”
May had previously filed for divorce in 2023, requesting ₦100 million in damages. Her marriage to Yul Edochie hit the spotlight in April 2022 when the actor publicly introduced Judy Austin as his second wife.
