Veteran Nollywood actress Toyin Afolayan, better known as Lola Idije, has opened up about the difference between her on-screen image and her real personality.
In a chat with fellow actress Ayo Adesanya, the 65-year-old revealed that while she is often cast in tough, no-nonsense roles, her true life is guided by faith, simplicity, and discipline.
“I am not wicked in real life. My faith in God leads me, and I live a modest lifestyle. I don’t drink, smoke, or engage in the habits people associate with some of the characters I play,” she said.
Lola Idije, who comes from Agbamu in Kwara State, is a relative of the late movie legend Adeyemi Afolayan (Ade Love), whom she credits for inspiring her early journey in film.
Her big break came in 1995 with her unforgettable role as Madam Adisa in Deadly Affair. Since then, she has become a household name, especially for her fiery mother-in-law characters. She is also behind popular phrases such as “Soro Soke Werey” and “Pele My Dear”, both of which gained huge popularity on social media.
Interestingly, acting was not her first career choice. Lola Idije once considered going into business, but it was her late brother’s encouragement that pushed her fully into the movie industry—a decision that shaped the remarkable career she is celebrated for today.
