Former President of the Nigeria Football Federation, Amaju Pinnick, has voiced optimism that the Super Eagles can still qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
In an interview on Arise News, Pinnick called on the players to stay united and fully committed as they prepare for crucial matches against Lesotho and Benin Republic.
He urged the team to play with the same drive and discipline they show at their clubs, emphasizing that focus and patriotism will make the difference.
“The key is to motivate the players,” Pinnick said. “They must think of Nigeria, lift the national spirit, and give their all on and off the pitch — just as they do for their clubs.”
Currently serving as the Deputy Chairperson of FIFA’s Men’s National Teams Competitions Committee, Pinnick revealed he keeps in touch with the players to boost their morale.
“I always remind them that the captain is the coach on the field. I talk to them often because qualifying is non-negotiable. I truly believe we can still make it. If we beat Lesotho tomorrow and then defeat Benin, we’ll be back on track,” he added.
In a related development, Zimbabwe’s head coach, Michael Nees, has vowed that his team will play with full commitment against South Africa in Durban, even though they are no longer in the race for qualification.
“For us, it’s important. Every match affects our FIFA ranking,” Nees told Gagasi FM. “We owe it to the sport to give our best and stay professional.”
Zimbabwe currently sit at the bottom of Group C with four points, while South Africa, Nigeria, and Benin remain locked in a tight battle for qualification.
