Anthony Joshua may soon be making his long-awaited return to Africa — and Ghana could be the stage. Reports suggest the British-Nigerian boxing star is eyeing a December 20 appearance at the Legon Sports Stadium in Accra.
The event, organized by Matchroom Boxing, is expected to feature Joshua in some capacity, though details remain under wraps until the former world champion makes an official announcement.
The night’s main attraction is said to be a light-heavyweight clash between Craig Richards and Dan Azeez, with India’s Nishant Dev and rising heavyweight Leo Atang also expected to appear on the card.
Joshua has often spoken about his dream of fighting on African soil, and this potential bout could bring that vision to life. According to Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn, the focus for now is on maintaining momentum rather than chasing another headline fight before 2025.
“There won’t be a big-name fight this year,” Hearn explained. “This is about staying active and continuing to build. We want him working quietly, improving, and getting ready for what’s next.”
The timing is significant for Ghana, which only recently lifted a temporary suspension on professional boxing following tragic in-ring incidents. The Ghana Boxing Federation has since introduced stronger safety and medical measures to protect athletes.
While it’s unclear whether Joshua will step into the ring or simply play a supporting role, Hearn hinted that preparations are already underway for something major in the coming year.
“Our goal is to get him in perfect condition for the big one,” Hearn said — and when asked who “the big one” might be, his answer came quickly: “Tyson Fury.”
Joshua last fought in September 2024, when he was stopped by Daniel Dubois in the fifth round while attempting to reclaim the IBF heavyweight crown.
