Benin’s constitutional court has declared that pro-government parties won a majority of parliamentary seats in Sunday’s election.
President Patrice Talon’s allies won 81 seats, while the main opposition party, the Democrats, won 28.
The opposition will be represented in parliament for the first time in four years, as in the previous election, the only parties allowed to compete were those loyal to President Tallon, whose opponents were imprisoned or exiled at the time.
Earlier, Democratic Party Leader Eric Houndete condemned the outcome, claiming that the poll was rigged but providing no evidence.
