Atiku Abubakar Bids Farewell to PDP After Decades of Loyalty
In a move that marks the end of a political era, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has formally ended his long-standing relationship with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
In a letter addressed to his ward chairman in Jada, Adamawa State, Atiku expressed deep appreciation for the platform the party had given him over the years, noting that serving as Vice President and twice running for the presidency under the PDP banner were some of the most defining moments of his public life.
“As one of the party’s founding members, this wasn’t an easy decision,” he wrote. “But the direction the PDP has taken no longer aligns with the vision we built it on.”
Atiku cited growing internal differences and a drift from the party’s original values as the key reasons for his exit. Still, his message carried no bitterness—only gratitude for the journey so far and good wishes for the party’s future.
His departure comes amid wider political shifts. Alongside Peter Obi and Nasir El-Rufai, Atiku has been part of a growing alliance aimed at challenging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s leadership in the next general elections.
The trio has now thrown their weight behind the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as their new platform heading into 2027, signaling what could be a significant shakeup in Nigeria’s political landscape.
