Nigerian afrofusion artist, Damini Ogulu, better known as Burna Boy, has hinted that the Recording Academy introduced the fresh category “Best African Music Performance” to the Grammy Awards due to his influence.
Burna Boy’s album, ‘Twice As Tall,’ clinched the “Best Global Music Album” title at the 63rd Grammy Awards, and he believes he played a part in shaping the inclusion of the new African music category.
In a recent conversation with the Los Angeles Times, the self-proclaimed “African Giant” shared his perspective.
He pondered whether the newly established ‘Best African Music Performance’ category would carry significant prestige.

Burna Boy mused, “I do hold a certain responsibility for the inception of the ‘Best African Music Performance’ category, and that’s heartening. Nonetheless, I wonder about its essence. Could it potentially be a token category? Will it carry comparable acclaim? I’m eagerly observing.”
A noteworthy development occurred in June when the Grammys introduced the category ‘Best African Music Performance.’
The organizers of the awards explained that this category is open to diverse forms of music from the African continent, spanning both contemporary and traditional genres, encompassing Afrobeats, Afro-pop, Amapiano, High Life, Fuji, and more.
