Spanish Police Confirm Diogo Jota Was Behind the Wheel in Fatal Car Crash
New details have emerged surrounding the tragic car crash that claimed the lives of footballer Diogo Jota and his younger brother, André Silva.
According to Spanish authorities, the accident occurred in the early hours of Thursday, July 3, around 12:30 a.m., along the A-52 motorway in Cernadilla, Zamora. The two brothers were reportedly on their way to a jetty, planning to board a ferry to the United Kingdom.
Initial police statements suggest the vehicle veered off the road—likely due to a tire burst during an attempt to overtake. Tragically, the car caught fire after the crash, and neither of the brothers survived.
Diogo Jota, 28, had reportedly opted for sea travel after doctors advised against flying due to a recent lung procedure. His younger brother, André, 26, was traveling with him at the time.
Just days after their burial, the Civil Guard in Zamora released a follow-up statement confirming that Diogo was the one driving the vehicle. Preliminary findings from the ongoing investigation indicate the car was moving well above the legal speed limit when the crash occurred.
“Evidence gathered so far points to Diogo Jota as the driver,” the statement read. “The vehicle’s tire marks are being closely examined as part of the expert report, which is still being finalized.”
Authorities noted that while the full report is pending, it will be submitted to the Puebla de Sanabria court for judicial review once completed.
The sudden loss of the two brothers has left fans, friends, and the football world in shock. As investigations continue, many are mourning not just the tragedy, but the incredible talent and lives cut painfully short.
