Deadly Flooding Claims 32 Lives in Niger Amidst Heavy Rainfall
Recent torrential rains have triggered devastating floods in Niger, resulting in the tragic loss of 32 lives, according to the state-owned ANP news agency’s report on Thursday.
The southern region of Tahoua has been the hardest-hit, with 12 reported casualties. Following closely are Maradi, situated in the south, with 10 deaths, and Zinder, also in the southern part of the country, with six fatalities. The report, referencing updated data from the Interior Ministry, also reveals that Tillaberi in the western region saw two deaths, while Niamey, the capital, and Diffa in the southeast, each reported one fatality.

The report further delineates that the loss of life occurred through two primary causes. Nine individuals tragically lost their lives as the houses they were residing in collapsed due to the heavy flooding. Additionally, 23 individuals met their fate by drowning in the floodwaters.
This unfortunate scenario is a recurring one for landlocked Niger during the annual rainy season, which spans from mid-June to mid-October. The country faces the challenges of coping with torrential downpours and the resulting floods during this period.
