Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate, announced on Sunday that he had conceded defeat in Ghana’s presidential election. In a gesture of humility, he called his opponent, John Mahama, to congratulate him on his victory.
“The people of Ghana have spoken, and they have chosen change at this moment. We humbly accept their decision,” Bawumia said during a press conference.
John Mahama, the opposition leader and candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), later confirmed the call on his social media account, acknowledging Bawumia’s congratulations.
According to internal tallies from the NPP, Mahama not only secured a decisive win in the presidential race but also led the NDC to victory in parliamentary elections.
Bawumia’s campaign faced significant challenges, as voters expressed frustration with the government’s handling of economic difficulties, including rising living costs. The state of the economy became a central issue in the election, overshadowing other debates and influencing the outcome.
