Senate Set to Hold Tribute Session for Late President Muhammadu Buhari
The Nigerian Senate will convene a special plenary session on Wednesday to honour the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died on July 13, 2025, in London after battling a long-term illness.
In a statement on Tuesday, the Senate announced that the tribute would reflect on Buhari’s life, leadership, and the imprint he left on Nigeria’s political and developmental journey.
This follows a similar ceremony held by the Federal Executive Council last week in Abuja. At that gathering, President Bola Tinubu described Buhari as a leader who carried the weight of governance with calm resolve and treated the demands of power with quiet dignity.
Buhari, who was Nigeria’s second-longest-serving Head of State, was laid to rest in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, with several local and international dignitaries present. He served as a civilian president from 2015 to 2023, and previously as military Head of State between 1983 and 1985.
No New States Approved – Senate Addresses Viral Claims
In a related development, Senate President Godswill Akpabio has firmly debunked reports circulating online that the Senate has approved the creation of new states.
Speaking during Tuesday’s plenary, Akpabio addressed a motion raised by Senator Abdul Ningi, who expressed concern about misleading social media posts suggesting that new states had been endorsed.
Akpabio clarified that while there have been over 40 proposals submitted for state creation, none has met the constitutional and legislative benchmarks required for approval.
“We’ve seen more than 42 proposals, but not a single one has completed the necessary legislative process,” he said.
The Senate President also expressed concern over communities already organizing meetings and drawing plans based on unverified claims. He urged Nigerians to disregard unofficial sources and wait for formal updates from the National Assembly regarding any constitutional amendments or legislative changes.
