A tragic incident unfolded as a police patrol car chasing suspected criminals plunged into a river, resulting in the loss of one officer’s life. Police Constable Prince Amoah, part of the Divisional taskforce team in the Western region, lost his life during the pursuit.
Constable Martha Ansah, Constable Bright Adinkrah, and service driver Corporal Frederick Cobbinah, all aboard the patrol car, were fortunately rescued after their vehicle submerged in the river.
The incident occurred as the police responded to information about three motorbikes with suspicious backpacks. The motorbikes, evading a checkpoint, prompted the patrol team to give chase.
The pursuit led them to an improvised wooden bridge near an abandoned mining pit. Unfortunately, the patrol car got stuck on the bridge and, tragically, the bridge collapsed as the driver attempted to reverse, causing the vehicle to plunge into the river.
Divers immediately launched efforts to rescue the trapped officers. Constable Prince Amoah’s body was recovered, and the rescued individuals were promptly transported to Kwawu Health Centre for urgent medical attention.
The incident happened during the team’s routine mobile patrols, assigned to assist at a special inter-school sports and gala competition at Kwawu. Authorities have recovered the damaged patrol vehicle and secured the missing service rifles. Investigations are underway to determine the cause of Constable Prince Amoah’s tragic death.
The Enchi District Police Commander, accompanied by other law enforcement officials, visited the scene for assessment. The Regional Commander and the Regional Crime Officer inspected the rescued victims at Samatex Hospital, underscoring the gravity of the situation.
As the community mourns the loss of Constable Prince Amoah, the entire police force is grappling with the aftermath of this devastating incident. The dedication and sacrifice of these officers in the line of duty serve as a poignant reminder of the challenges faced by law enforcement personnel daily.
