In a stunning turn of events, the Rwanda National Football Team triumphed over Nigeria’s Super Eagles in Uyo, Akwa Ibom, on Monday, November 18, during their final 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier. The match, which took place at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, saw Rwanda pull off an unexpected victory that left the Nigerian fans in shock.
Heading into this critical Matchday 6 encounter, Rwanda needed to defeat Nigeria and rely on a Libya victory over Benin Republic to secure their place in the 2025 AFCON. Against all odds, the Rwandan team clinched a 2-1 win, earning three vital points.
The first half was a tactical stalemate, with Rwanda dominating possession but struggling to break down Nigeria’s defense. Although the Super Eagles had a few opportunities, they found themselves on the back foot, spending much of the half chasing the ball. The scoreline remained 0-0 as both teams headed into the break.
In the second half, Coach Augustine Eguavoen made key substitutions, bringing on Samuel Chukwueze and Frank Onyeka to add more attacking spark. Chukwueze, in particular, made an immediate impact, scoring a sensational solo goal in the 59th minute. He weaved through the midfield and expertly slotted the ball into the net, giving Nigeria a 1-0 lead.
However, Rwanda responded swiftly, scoring two goals within just three minutes to take the lead and ultimately secure a 2-1 victory. The home side was unable to recover, despite the strong performance from Chukwueze.
Despite the remarkable win for Rwanda, Libya finished third in Group D and missed out on qualifying for the 2025 AFCON. Nigeria topped the group with 11 points from six games, while Benin Republic secured second place and their own qualification spot, thanks to a goalless draw with Libya.
The unexpected outcome of this match adds to the drama of the AFCON qualifiers, leaving fans eagerly anticipating the next phase of the tournament.
