Parliament Requests Finance Minister’s Briefing on Ghana’s IMF Rescue Plan
The minority in parliament has made a formal request for Ken Ofori-Atta, the finance minister, to provide a comprehensive update on Ghana’s rescue plan from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). This request comes after Ghana received the first payment of $600 million from the IMF on May 19, 2023, as part of a $3 billion extended credit facility aimed at supporting the country’s struggling economy.
During a parliamentary session, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, a member of parliament for North Tongu, highlighted the importance of Ofori-Atta’s presence in the chamber on Wednesday to address lingering questions regarding the IMF agreement. Ablakwa expressed his desire for the finance minister to take advantage of his scheduled appearance to provide a comprehensive briefing on the IMF program to the House.
Ablakwa emphasized the need for the majority leader and minister for parliamentary affairs to consider this proposal, pointing out that it would be a valuable opportunity to gather essential information and insights from the finance minister regarding Ghana’s engagement with the IMF.
In response, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, the majority leader, assured the parliament that efforts would be made to coordinate and accommodate the request, indicating a willingness to engage in the discussion.
The briefing from the finance minister is expected to provide valuable clarity on the IMF rescue plan and its implications for Ghana’s economy.
