A group of Nigerian students currently studying at Teesside University in the United Kingdom are facing challenges due to purportedly unjust deportation orders. The students claim that the devaluation of the naira has made it difficult for them to meet tuition fee deadlines, resulting in visa sponsorship breaches.
Following protests by the affected students on May 22, the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) announced plans for a delegation from the Federal Government to meet with Teesside University officials. The aim is to address the situation and seek a peaceful resolution.
The students, citing the devaluation of the naira, expressed their financial struggles, which have affected their ability to meet payment deadlines. However, the university states that it must enforce these measures due to external regulations.
In response, NIDCOM organized a virtual meeting with the affected students, urging them to remain calm and avoid taking matters into their own hands. They emphasized the need for fairness in the university’s treatment of the students.
Amb Christian Okeke, a representative of the Nigerian High Commission in the UK, will lead the delegation to meet with the university administration in hopes of finding a resolution to the issue.
