A western Kenyan court has denied bail to the main suspect in the murder of LGBTQ activist and fashion designer Edwin Chiloba.
Jacktone Odhiambo denied murdering his friend in Eldoret, where he was a university student, in front of a high court judge.
According to the police prosecutor, the two lived together as partners.
Mr. Chiloba’s body was discovered in a metal box dumped on the side of the road near Eldoret in early January.
According to Kenya’s chief pathologist, he died of asphyxia caused by smothering.
The murder sent shockwaves through Kenya’s LGBTQ community, where homosexuality is frowned upon and the gay sex is punishable by up to 14 years in prison, despite the fact that the law is rarely enforced.
