Senate President Godswill Akpabio has strongly refuted allegations of misconduct leveled against him by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
Speaking during Wednesday’s plenary session, Akpabio addressed the claims head-on, emphasizing his respect for women and his upbringing. “At no point have I ever harassed any woman. My late mother raised me well, and I have always upheld values of respect and dignity. In fact, I was once recognized as the most gender-friendly governor in Nigeria,” he stated.
The Senate President noted that since February 25, he had been flooded with calls regarding the issue. Acknowledging the heated discussions circulating online, he urged the public to allow due process to take its course rather than rush to conclusions.

Shortly after his statement, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan formally brought forward a petition under Order 40, accusing Akpabio of misconduct and abuse of power. Seeking official recognition, she requested to present her case before the legislative body.
In response, the Senate referred the matter to the Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Code of Conduct for thorough review.
Tensions within the Senate had already been mounting since a seating arrangement dispute in February led to an open confrontation between both lawmakers. The disagreement has since evolved into a larger controversy, drawing widespread attention and raising questions about conduct within the chamber.
Adding to the drama, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan arrived at Wednesday’s session accompanied by her husband. In a brief moment before proceedings began, she shared a kiss with him before taking her designated seat. However, as the Senate President entered, she remained seated—an unusual departure from the tradition of standing in acknowledgment of the presiding officer’s arrival.
