Argentina has decided to withdraw from the World Health Organization (WHO), President Javier Milei’s office announced on Wednesday. This move follows the recent decision by the United States to exit the UN health agency.
According to government spokesperson Manuel Adorni, the decision stems from fundamental disagreements over health policies, particularly concerning the handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. He emphasized that Argentina would not allow any international organization to dictate policies that compromise national sovereignty.
Adorni further stated that this step allows Argentina to shape health policies that align with local needs while ensuring better allocation of resources.
Milei, a self-described “anarcho-capitalist,” has expressed admiration for US President Donald Trump, who also pulled the United States out of the WHO. Trump had criticized the organization’s pandemic response and funding structure, leading to Washington’s withdrawal.
Since assuming office in December 2023, Milei has aggressively reduced public spending, keeping his promise to eliminate the budget deficit. While his economic policies have led to a record trade surplus in 2024, they have also contributed to increased poverty due to reduced imports and consumer spending.
Milei was also the first international leader to visit Trump at his Mar-a-Lago estate following the Republican’s electoral victory in November, signaling a close political alignment between the two leaders.
