Liverpool Manager Arne Slot Handed Two-Game Touchline Ban Following Everton Clash
Liverpool’s head coach, Arne Slot, will be sidelined for two matches after receiving a red card during the intense 2-2 draw against Everton at Goodison Park on February 12.
Slot was dismissed after confronting referee Michael Oliver at the end of the game. As a result, he will miss Liverpool’s upcoming Premier League fixtures—Newcastle at Anfield on Wednesday and Southampton on March 8.
However, the suspension does not apply to European competitions, meaning Slot will be available on the touchline when Liverpool faces Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League last-16 first-leg clash on March 5.
In addition to the ban, an independent Football Association commission has fined Slot £70,000, a charge he has accepted. Assistant coach Sipke Hulshoff has also been penalized with a two-game suspension and a £7,000 fine.
Liverpool and Everton were both hit with additional fines—£65,000 and £50,000, respectively—after players from both sides lost control in the chaotic final moments of the match.
Everton’s last-minute equalizer, scored by James Tarkowski in the 98th minute, sparked wild celebrations, with fans spilling onto the pitch. Liverpool raised concerns over the goal, arguing that VAR should have disallowed it due to an alleged foul on defender Ibrahima Konaté in the build-up.
Slot is expected to return to the sidelines following the international break, just in time for Liverpool’s Carabao Cup final against Newcastle on March 16.
Currently, Liverpool sits comfortably at the top of the Premier League, holding an 11-point lead. They will meet Everton again at Anfield on April 2.
Notably, this isn’t Slot’s first touchline suspension. He previously served a ban in December during Liverpool’s EFL Cup quarter-final clash against Southampton after accumulating three yellow cards.
