For the past year, South African police have been evicting asylum seekers camped outside the regional headquarters of the UN refugee agency in Pretoria.

According to local authorities, makeshift shelters lack water, electricity, and sanitation and pose a health risk.

The migrants, many of whom are from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, have repeatedly refused to be transferred to the Lindela detention center for undocumented migrants, claiming that it is unsafe.

They’ve asked for safe passage to a third country.
